Players assume the roles of elite human United Nations Space Command soldiers known as "Orbital Drop Shock Troopers" or ODSTs during the events of Halo 2 and Halo 3. There are two modes of play: in the game's campaign mode, players explore the ruined city of New Mombasa to discover what happened to their missing teammates in the midst of an alien invasion.

In the "Firefight" multiplayer option, players battle increasingly difficult waves of enemies to score points and survive as long as possible; the Halo 3 multiplayer experience is contained on a separate disc packaged with ODST. Story director Joseph Staten penned a detective story utilizing film noir designs, settings, and characters. Composer Martin O'Donnell abandoned his previous Halo themes to create a quieter, jazz-influenced sound. During development, the planned expansion grew in scope to that of a full-sized game. 3. Splinter Cell: Conviction

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction is the fifth installment in the Splinter Cell video game series released in April 2010. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal, developers of Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and the sixth generation versions of Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Key members of the Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas team, such as creative director Maxime Bland, also worked on the game. Gameloft released a handheld version of the game for the iPhone OS on May 27, 2010.

Splinter Cell: Conviction introduces a number of new gameplay features to the series, one of which is the "Mark & Execute" feature, which allows the player to mark specific targets, such as enemies or objects, and shoot them when they burst through a door or window. The player can choose to prioritize these targets, so that, for example, he could distract one guard by shooting out a light in his vicinity and then take out another guard. Another new feature is the "Last Known Position", which occurs when the player breaks the line of sight of an alerted guard.

This creates a visual silhouette of where the guard thinks Sam is, allowing the player to strategically flank his enemies. Main target subjects can use the player's abilities against them. The player can be taken hostage by the subject in co-op mode; the hostage's partner can neutralize the subject by shooting them or grabbing them off his teammate. -Wikipedia.org

2. MLB 2K10

Major League Baseball 2K10 or, in short, MLB 2K10, is a MLB licensed baseball simulation video game published by 2K Sports. MLB 2K10 was available for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Wii and Nintendo DS. The game was released on March 2, 2010.

New to the series is the "My Player" feature, a career mode in which the player shepherds a player's career from the minors to the majors. Other features from the previous game have been improved or tweaked, including hitting and pitching. The game also features "MLB Today", an online ticker that tracks real-life Major League Baseball news and scores. With the MLB Today feature you can also play the same game that is being played in the real MLB. For example, if the New York Yankees are playing the Boston Red Sox and C.C. Sabathia is pitching, in the game he will be pitching along with the same lineup that is being used.

GameZone's Michael Lafferty gave the game a 7/10, saying "In the past, the 2K series was hampered by a lot of little things. The developers obviously put a lot of time in improving the overall gameplay and it shows. The new modes are fun but need some attention to iron out bugs, and there are some areas where the errors are just downright contrary to the game of baseball. On the surface, baseball seems a simple game, but to the baseball fan, the layers of complexity are what create that overall feeling that is Major League Baseball." -Wikipedia.org

Minor League Baseball And Ribs: BBQ Tips To Make Your Next Tailgating Party A Delicious Success!

While tailgating used to be strictly associated with football games, baseball fans are turning this tradition into a popular pre-game event as well. Especially for those who don't have Major League Baseball teams in their hometown, Minor League Baseball tailgating is very popular.

One of the most popular menu items at a baseball tailgating party? BBQ ribs and other all-American barbeque fare. If you're planning to pack up the meat and sauce for your next pre-game party, consider these BBQ tips to make your event a delicious success!

BBQ Ribs Don't Cook Fast - Plan Accordingly!

One of the most important BBQ tips for a tailgating event? Plan accordingly! BBQ ribs are great choices for delicious tailgate meals, but trying to grill them in a ballpark parking lot in time to see the player's warm up might be cutting it close. Cooking food quickly at tailgate events is fine for burgers, hotdogs and sausages. However, to achieve the best tasting meat, slow cooking over indirect heat is a must. For that special BBQ flavor, juicy inside and crisp outside, smoking for several hours is the only way to achieve perfection.

You could arrive at the stadium at 6:00am to get the grill going (and many fans do!). If this isn't your idea of a relaxing day though, here's one BBQ tip from the pros: do some pre-cooking at home. Smoke the ribs until almost done at home, then pack them up and finish them on the grill at the stadium.

Or, if even that seems like too much work, but you would really like to enjoy BBQ ribs at your tailgating party, considering picking up some from your favorite barbeque restaurant!

BBQ Tips - Safety First

Anytime you're grilling, it's important to follow basic safety guidelines to ensure a good time for all. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the grill you're using and be careful when handling hot charcoal, lighter fluid and lighters. Keep in mind that at most tailgating events, people are parked very close to each other; always position your grill away from anything flammable (including vehicles!) and if you can, so the smoke is downwind from patrons. Finally, always bring a fire extinguisher with you - just in case!

Fun And Games Go Hand In Hand With Tailgating

Whether you've decided to man the smoker all day, or are taking a short cut to get delicious BBQ ribs into your belly, there will be plenty of time for fun and games at a baseball tailgating event.

To make the most of this opportunity, sports goers often bring along games to play in between meals, and plenty of drinks to enjoy over a good conversation. One of the current popular games is corn hole, also known as bean bag toss. These game boards can be designed with your favorite American or National League team so you can cheer for them and egg on the rivals while you have a great time.

Bottom line: BBQ ribs and baseball tailgating just go hand in hand. Whether you spend the whole day grilling, join in games, or just sit around and chat with friends, these two favorite American pastimes are sure to be a hit with the whole family.

In Gears of War 2, the human Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG) forces continue their fight against the Locust horde, who are attempting to sink all of the cities on the planet Sera by using a big riftworm to eat the ground beneath them. Sergeant Marcus Fenix leads Delta Squad into the depths of the planet to try to stop the worm from eating but instead they discover the true intent of the Locust actions. The player controls Fenix in the main mission campaign, with the ability to play cooperatively with a second player controlling Fenix's best friend and fellow Squad member Dominic "Dom" Santiago.

The game includes several existing and new multiplayer modes including five-on-five battles between human and Locust forces, and a "Horde" mode that challenges up to five players against waves of Locust forces with ever-increasing strength. New weapons and gameplay mechanics such as "hockey fights" and the ability to use downed foes as "meatshields" were added to the game. -Wikipedia.org

2. God of War III

God of War III is an action-adventure video game for PlayStation 3, developed by Sony Santa Monica, published by Sony Computer Entertainment and released worldwide in March 2010 and is the fifth installment to the series. Loosely based on Greek mythology and focused on protagonist Kratos, the game forms part of a saga - the God of War series - with revenge as a central theme.

In this final chapter in the current storyline, Kratos and his initial allies the Titans storm Mount Olympus in an attempt to kill Zeus and the Olympian Gods, leading to a series of confrontations across the Underworld and Olympus and the reintroduction of Pandora's Box. -Wikipedia.org

1. Red Faction: Guerrilla

Red Faction: Guerrilla is a third-person shooter video game developed by Volition, Inc. and published by THQ. It was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in June 2009 in North America and Europe. A Microsoft Windows version, ported by Reactor Zero, was released on September 15, 2009. The game is the third installment in the Red Faction series.

In Red Faction: Guerrilla, the player takes the role of Alec Mason as he assists the Red Faction to disrupt and overthrow the Earth Defense Force (EDF) on Mars. This is presented to the player in a third person perspective, a departure from the series' previous two games which were first person shooters. Developer Volition changed the camera perspective to help the player see and appreciate the surroundings as they are destroyed.

Much of the game centers around the game's Geomod 2.0 engine, which allows for buildings, cover, and other structures to be dynamically destroyed. In many cases, destroying buildings will leave behind salvage, the game's form of currency, which can be used along with salvage rewarded by completing missions to unlock and upgrade weaponry and technology at safehouses. During the campaign, the player is equipped with a sledgehammer-like weapon, along with up to 3 other weapons or explosive devices. The player also has the opportunity to control armed vehicles such as tanks and walkers for more destructive options. -Wikipedia.org

A peep into Baseball stats

Baseball is a favored sport in many countries and people show a keen interest in playing this sport. Just like other sports, this sport also has various factors which play a vital role. Baseball is such a game where statistics cover a large area. Baseball stats give an overview of the game in totality. There are a large number of factors on which the statistics are calculated in baseball. Baseball statistics help in checking out which baseball team is better than the other. The stats are also used by each team to check out the performance of the other team and prepare their strategy for next game.

Statistics in baseball are not only for the teams but also for the players. While selecting players for a baseball team the management of the team selects the players who have good baseball players' ratings as well good stats. A player having good stats is considered to have a higher ability than the one who doesn't have. Other than the management of a team checking out the baseball stats of the players, the opponent teams also keep a measure. Before a game is played, the pitchers and the catchers of one team make a detailed study of the batters of the opponent team to strategize their game plan for defending the opponent. Baseball stats also act as a medium through which the pitchers and the managers determine the place to pitch in the opponent. This is done by finding out the position of a player on the field.

Relative Power Index, more commonly known as RPI is a major baseball stat. The performance of the teams in Major League Baseball is determined on the basis of this RPI. The higher the RPI score of a team, the better is the performance. Thus while deciding on the position of a team; it is better to check the RPI which is an important part of the baseball stats.

The position of the players in a baseball game, be it the pitchers, the batters or the catchers, assist in determining the baseball rankings. The baseball stats are also comprised of these baseball rankings. Thus proper baseball stats can be maintained when proper baseball rankings can be obtained. Judging a baseball team or a player of the team is based on keeping track of the baseball stats. Sports enthusiasts who are interested in knowing about the current ratings and baseball rankings should keep a watch on the baseball stats regularly. Online websites are there which have lots of information on the baseball rankings, baseball ratings and also other baseball stats.

Fantasy Sports Providers Win the Right to Use Players Names and Statistics

Fantasy sports are an $800 million dollar industry in the United States with some 27 million players. Fantasy sports players typically draft a team of professional athletes before the season begins, and utilize statistical programs on player performance, as well as other software tools, to create a winning team.

Fantasy Sports Lawsuit History

What motivates fantasy sports enthusiasts to play the game? Some fantasy sports websites provide a large cash prize to winning teams. For many years, the Major League Baseball and the NFL Players Association have been demanding (and in many cases receiving) licensing fees from fantasy sports websites for use of actual players names and stats.

Back in 2005, CDM, a fantasy Sports baseball company, sued the Major League Baseball Association (represented by Advanced Media) for the right to use players names and stats without paying licensing fees. The fantasy sports company won based on the fact that first amendment rights hold that the information is in the public domain and does not fall under intellectual property rights.

In 2006, a similar case was presented in Saint Louis. This time, Judge Mary Ann Medler refused to even hear the case. She ruled that fantasy baseball leagues were free to use player statistics and names because they are not the intellectual property of Major League Baseball or the Players Associations.

The Fantasy Football Lawsuit that Proactively Challenged Licensing Fees and Won

In 2008, CBSSports.com acted proactively to eliminate licensing fees. The online fantasy sports provider brought a suit against the NFL Players Association in Minnesota, for the right to use players identities and stats without paying licensing fees. U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery ruled that names and stats are protected under the First Amendment. After winning the case, CBSSports.com added college football leagues to their roster and took the ruling to apply to all fantasy sports. Although there is an appeal on the case, it is apparent that a precedent has been set with the Major League Baseball Players Associations ruling.

Fantasy Football Players Blog About Lawsuit

Many fans in the blog-o-sphere are disgruntled by the greed of the MLB and NFL Players Associations. Alec, of ScreamingSports.com said that major league sports fans alrea dy pay enough money to watch live games. I mean these guys don't make enough money without once again screwing the guys who support them? Bad enough I have to eat $6 hot dogs and $8 beers at a game. Now you want a piece of my fantasy team?

A New Fantasy Sports Website CEO Comments on Ruling

Fantasy sports providers are pleased with the ruling, which eliminates licensing fees and improves their profit margins. It also widens the field for new companies to be born. Jason McCoy, CEO of Stinkball.com says CBSSports.com sued the NFL Players Association because they wanted to be free to run their business as they saw fit. With the success of this case it allows for new concepts in fantasy sports to emerge without fear the MLB or NFL Players Associations can charge outrageous licensing fees. The CBSSports.com case is good news because it opens fantasy sports to new, innovative ideas that are being brought to the marketplace.

The website www.Sti nkball.com, is a new fantasy sports site which offers a $10,000 grand prize at the end of the season for the worst performing team. There are also weekly and seasonal prizes. This concept in fantasy sports is quite different from a focus on acquiring the best players who put up the best performances. Yet the same methods of tracking players and performance still applies, only now the fantasy player must take into account interceptions, fumbles, sacks, and more in order to build the worst team.

With legal precedents set regarding players stats and names in the public domain, the fantasy sports industry could very well takeoff in uncharted directions, adding diversity to the games and bringing more excitement for players.

Major League Baseball Will Test For Hgh In The Minor Leagues

Major league baseball will finally test for HGH. This is a huge step for Major League baseball. Major League Baseball will do blood tests for HGH in the minor leagues. Why the minor leagues? The baseball players will be randomly tested. The playerswill be chosen randomly, they will give their blood, and Major League baseball will check their blood for HGH.

Will the HGH testing happen in the Major Leagues? No it will not happen right now. Major League baseball will use minor league baseball players as guinea pigs. However, if you are under contract, you cannot be tested. If the tests work-which is a big if? HGH testing is hard because scientists are working on both sides. As scientist try to develop reliable HGH testing, other scientists develop other types of HGH that cannot be found by tests.

"Baseball officials said the importance of Thursday's announcement was to put "a system in place," with the goal being to implement more effective testing as it develops. Currently, there is no certified urine test to effectively detect HGH." (LATimes.com).

Where this HGH testing will lead nobody knows for sure. Baseball has finally put their cleats down on the playing field. Major League baseball players will not be tested because they are being protected by their union. The baseball players union does not believe the HGH test is reliable. Many people agree with this. However, if the tests work in the Minors, this will give Major League baseball something to bring to the next bargaining agreement.

Does this mean steroids and HGH will be removed from baseball? Probably not, but it is a start. This is the first step to pointing the finger back at the players who cheat. It is about time somebody took a step towards cleaning up the game. Keep your eyes and ears open for more news about Major League baseball and their testing for HGH in minor league players.

In other related news. A-Rod hit another A-bomb. This was number 599 for Alex Rodriguez. The steroids infested player is one homerun awayfrom number 600. This would have been huge news before we found out A-Rod was a cheater. It is time to remove all cheating from baseball and other sports. Hopefully, Major League baseball will be successful in their testing for HGH in minor league players.

Rugby-USA Rugby and College

College rugby teams are where most of the current rugby players and USA Rugby members come from. College club rugby is actually now the largest portion of USA Rugby's membership. Once a little played sport on college campuses, now there is a wide variety of levels of competition on college campuses. It is expected that rugby's growth will someday rival that of other pro sports, with elementary school-aged children playing the sport through their school career as they now do soccer, football and baseball.

If you are looking to start a new college or high school team, USA Rugby offers a lot of support. They have a start-up-guide and posters; they can help you draft by-laws and they have tools to help get your team going. They can even offer help with recruitment, a game day check list, fundraising and medical insurance information. Few youth sports genres are more supported by a national organization than rugby.

If you are a student who is interested in a rugby scholarship, check your schools carefully and also check back regularly for updates as this is an emerging and growing forum. Even if you don't get a scholarship out of high school, you may be eligible for generous financial aid when it comes to the sport. From the USA Rugby site you can click on "collegiate clubs" and then on "club scholarships" for a complete listing of the colleges and universities that participate in a rugby program and the scholarships or financial aid that may be available. USA Rugby gives you a quick overview on the school and provides contact information.

USA Rugby also offers All-American recognition for rugby athletes. Both male and female athletes can be recognized, though their sources for that recognition may be different at this time. Men's All-Americans play in a regional All-Star Tournament, and then may compete as a representative of USA Rugby. Women, on the other hand, are selected by an appointed panel that utilizes local and regional recommendations for recognition. This will most likely change as, for the first time in 2009, the Women's Premier League, the WPL, pitted the top senior women's clubs against each other, resulting in a National Championship award for a female team in November of 2009. The 2009 WPL included teams from Berkeley, Minnesota, Oregon, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Washington. An All-Star Tournament cannot be far behind.

Rugby is definitely a growing sport and one that seems to be on the rise rather than on the wane. The excitement of the game and the athleticism required for play will insure its longevity.

How Your Child Can Earn A College Scholarship

As children get older and move through high school, they will begin thinking about and planning for their future. In many instances, this will include plans for college. Their friends may be talking about where they are going and teachers and guidance counselors will be encouraging them to send out their applications. While college is not the right path for everyone, it is the next step after high school to a lifelong professional career. If your child is thinking about college, but you have concerns about finances, it is best to begin your planning early. There are alternate sources of income if the cash for college is not readily available. Your child may be eligible for a scholarship that can help them offset the cost of college with funding. If your child has athletic talent, consider encouraging them to try for a sports scholarship. They can improve their skills with a baseball pitching machine or softball pitching machines, which is more likely they will be able to e arn scholarship money based on their athletic talent.

One of the most common ways students earn scholarship money is through their grades. This is one of the more competitive options, but it can really pay off if a kid works hard all through high school and maintains their grades. Typically there are additional requirements for earning scholarship money, but if your sights are set on a scholarship, the grades are going to factor into any official decisions.

Another factor that colleges and scholarship committees take into account is a student's community involvement. If a student has worked hard for four years in high school and has great grades, but they have not participated in any other activities, their likelihood of a scholarship is going to drop. Colleges and scholarship boards look for well-rounded students, so remember that grades are not everything. If your child is hoping for a scholarship, it is important they focus on community involvement, as well as grades.

When considering ways to be eligible for scholarship money, look at what parents have done in addition to what students have done. There are many companies that offer scholarships for the children of employees, so make sure you check with your company. Those who have served in the armed forces may also be eligible to help their children pay for college with scholarship money. There are also veteran's scholarships available for service members, so if you decide to enroll in the armed forces before attending college, you will be eligible for financial support.

Finally, if your child is afflicted by a disability, there may be financial support available to help them pay for college. Since a physical or learning disability may bring additional challenges for a student, there may be financial support available. While your child may not want to rely on their disability to give them an advantage, they can view the financial support as something they have earned by working hard and overcoming whatever challenges their disability brought into their lives.

College Or Pros, What Pays For Young Baseball Players?

If your son is a professional baseball prospect, you might want to know what makes more sense for him: continue playing at the collegiate level, or turn pro right away. The price where it pays to go pro might surprise you.

Of the four major U.S. sports, only baseball and basketball draft high school and college players together. However, the basketball draft lasts only two rounds and includes players from overseas professional leagues, while baseball provides far more opportunities. The Amateur Baseball Draft lasts ten rounds and includes only high school and college players.

While baseball offers immediate professional opportunities to high school graduates, a minor leaguer ballplayer usually needs three or four years of seasoning to be ready for the major league roster. A player who signs a contract in 2007 and immediately reported to a Rookie League or Class A team should be on the major league roster on or before the 2010 season.

First year salaries for a minor league ballplayer range from $850 a month for the first contract season to $2,150 when the player reaches Triple-A, one level below the major leagues. Given the low salaries, the decision to skip college has to depend on the player's signing bonus and the quality of the college programs that are offering scholarships. It might not pay for a ballplayer to pass on a top college program if the academics are strong enough to help them with life after baseball.

What is a good guideline for a signing bonus for a high school baseball player?

My rule of thumb is that the signing bonus should equal or exceed the projected cost of four years of college plus the major league minimum salary. This assumes the player would remain in college through his senior year-although it is common for baseball players to drop out without completing their degree. At worst, if the player does not make the major leagues, he should have the opport unity to save enough money to pay for college while he toils in the minors.

Following this rule of thumb, a high school player would need to receive a minimum signing bonus of $600,000.
The $600,000 minimum is based on:

The combined costs: tuition, fees, room and board and essentials at a top private university and traditional baseball powerhouses such as Stanford, the University of Miami, or the University of Southern California approached $45,000. It is quite likely that these costs will approach, if not surpass, $200,000 to complete a bachelor's degree.

A 2010 major league minimum salary of $400,000, as stipulated in the most recent agreement between the Major League Baseball Players Association and the owners of the all 30 Major League Baseball teams. The 2011 league minimum is not known at this time; it is tied to a future cost of living increase.

How many players chosen in the 2006 Amateur Draft earned the recommended minimum signing bonus of $600,000?

Only the top 60 players received a signing bonus of $600,000 or more. Only 27 were high school players, the rest were college prospects.

What about the ballplayer who has finished some of his college education or completed his degree?

A college player's signing bonus should, as a minimum, cover the remaining costs of his college education, plus the wages he might have earned by using his degree, but not playing baseball.

The player with a community college degree has already invested in his education; he can use his community college degree to find work, continue his education at a four-year college, or turn pro. The community college graduate might need as much as $100,000 to complete a four-year degree at a private college. His entry-level salary, after completing his bachelor's degree, might range from $35,000 to $55,000 depending on grades and course of study, and, this player might still need three to four years of seasoning in the minor leagues.

This player would need a signing bonus in excess of $180,000, but he has a chance of getting a larger bonus if h e stays in school and performs well the next season.

The scholarship player who completed his degree can play ball, or use his education to do something else. Like other prospects, he may need some seasoning in the minors--and his salary after three or four years of non-baseball employment could approach, maybe exceed $50,000, almost the same as tuition and expenses for college. His bonus should also be in excess of $180,000.

How many college draftees earned the recommended minimum signing bonus of $180,000?

There were 150 prospects who received a signing bonus of $180,000, or more, with the lowest ranked player selected at the top of the fifth round of the draft.

What is the major tradeoff?

The top high school baseball prospect must consider the risk of postponing college against his chances of making a major league roster within four years. It is quite difficult for a professional baseball player to attend co llege in the off-season because of travel and seasons that overlap into the fall and spring semesters. Top prospects are also encouraged to play winter ball; that also overlaps into study time.

However, the number of high school players who can command the big bonuses that make it pay to go pro is an elite few-and that number fluctuates from year to year because it is based on the annual level of talent in the pool of draft-eligible players.

The top college prospect must consider the opportunities to complete his education and increase his signing bonus after each season of amateur competition. The college prospect will have a degree, but he will be off to a later start in his professional career, especially if he needs seasoning in the minor leagues. However, the college graduate has more options for life after baseball.

Unless the player becomes an established major league star, it would be better for him to build a post-baseball life off a college degree than return home to lament glory days.

How baseball can be educational

Sports are a fundamental part of life, they enable us to relax and enjoy living-a classic example of all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The very essence of how sports bring people from all over the world is also an amazing concept; this simple games have united millions world over to forget about everything else and focus on cheering and simply being happy. Sports however, aside from bringing joy and making life just a tad bit easy, can also be very educational. There are so many things that simply being involved in a sport can teach you. These are things that you would never know or take seriously, if you were not part of the scene or the hype. To prove that this holds true we will take an example of baseball; the all-American game that brings millions of Americans together and still manages to instill some hard core values to each individual in the team and the millions of fans that it boasts of.

Baseball is a game played by two teams. Each team has nine innings and the point is that each team tries to score runs. The home team always bats second and the visiting team bats at the top of the inning. Baseball has a very humble history. It is said to originate from the very popular English game of rounders played in the nineteenth century. It was commonly referred to as town ball' or the base' or baseball'. The first game of baseball that was recorded was in 1846.It became a very big deal thereafter with several amateur teams being called to discuss the rules and so forth and many leagues being formed in support of the game. While baseball is such a tremendous and great game it still manages to be a tool through which to pass information almost overtaking the basic classroom in its effectiveness perhaps it is celebrated by thousands, millions at that.

Professional baseball players play a key role as role models to a lot of America's youths. This same youth is faced with so many problems, so many questions, so many decisions and it is amazing to see how being in the baseball scene is affecting them positively. For instance obesity affects almost half the population of Americans especially the youth, what with new technology and all that has relegated the ultimate importance of the outdoors and simple basic exercise. However, an American in the baseball scene is influenced by his or her favorite baseball star to keep fit and eat healthy. If my all time favorite baseball super star takes time to work out and eat healthy and looks like a million dollars while at it then what excuse do I have to sit at the couch like a potato all day doing nothing. With the millions of fans that it has one can only imagine a how healthy America will be in a few years time. I keep an archive of almost what each particular star does to keep fi t, what foods they avoid and how they generally manage to look so healthy all the time, then I follow these steps and do my at most best to ensure that I am fit and healthier each day. I have to say that without this kind of motivation I probably would have no interest whatsoever with keeping fit or being healthy, what with my age and the many things happening around me, especially in the college scene.

The issue of drugs is also quite rampant in the United States of America and especially among the youth. Drugs like cocaine and marijuana are almost too shockingly popular among the youth and a healthy lifestyle is becoming a thing of the past. However, for a youth in the baseball scene leading a healthy lifestyle becomes almost like a mantra. First of all there is the general influence of the baseball stars not to do drugs. Some anti-drugs organizations use these stars for their campaigns because they will no doubt reach their millions of fans and impact better than any other person would. Imagine being advised first hand by your baseball hero not to use drugs, not to be part of the almost sixty percent of youths in America taking part in the misuse of drugs but to abstain and stay clean; because he did it and that is how he got to be so successful, you would listen, perhaps better than you would if your parents or someone else talked to you about it. It is very endearing , warms the heart even to see thousands of youths some of whom are friends making such wonderful decisions having been influenced by the baseball scene. This goes a long way to show that baseball can be very educative indeed.

There are also slogans that are formed and given to the fans which contain very educative information. They educate about the use of drugs and the very awful effects they have on a person's mental, physical and emotional state. Effects of each particular drug are highlighted and the general use of these drugs is vehemently discouraged. There are young people who use drugs because they are ignorant to what and how they affect the body and baseball helps eradicate this ignorance through this. It also strives to educate about the negative effects of steroids; how unnaturally stimulating your body can cause such drastic outcomes and cause health problems to a person. Personally, this is perhaps the greatest move ever made using a sport like baseball to discourage performance enhancers because this is a field where so many would be tempted to take them. When all this anti-drugs campaign is happening around you it is almost impossible to still become indifferent and become a dru g user and thus America continues to strive in its success of becoming a drug free-state .Baseball also gives thousands of scholarships to hundreds of talented and young people throughout America. Thus many American youth in the baseball scene have benefited through and through from this, however if any player who was deemed talented was found with a record of having used drugs or having been associated with drugs in anyway, this scholarship is automatically withdrawn. Baseball not only cares about how much talent you have it cares about how one is morally and socially too (http://drugfree.mlblogs.com). It is very helpful especially for a college student like me to be in the baseball scene. I would have been a victim of so many frat parties and perhaps even jeopardized my school work but my love and following of this game and its stars makes me avoid this over indulgence and my college life has become so much more about purpose than about recklessness.

College Baseball: Stealing Bases and Finding Scholarships

College baseball recruiting often focuses on finding new talent amongst young people to play in their respective teams. Kids and parents alike sometimes don't realize that senior year high school is just too late in the game to check up on prospective sports scholarships offered by colleges.

In baseball, the steal of second is best employed if a team is ahead, tied, or behind by no more than two runs. The theory that a batter should swing at the pitch so as to "protect" the runner may seem unnecessary, since this doesn't have an immediate impact on the catcher's throw, but it can disrupt the catcher's concentration and cause a less accurate throw to second base.

The baserunner then begins his lead by moving one step closer towards the pitcher. This gives the illusion of him being closer to the bag than he actually is. The ideal lead length is one and a half his or so of his own body length. This should give him the o pportunity to reach the bag in a pickoff attempt with one full step and a dive back, wherein he will touch the bag on the rightfield side.

The popularity of college sports in the United States has made college sports scholarship a thing that many high school students aspire to. Many students talented in baseball are interested about their chances in playing for college baseball teams. Many high school students are hoping to get noticed in college baseball recruiting in order to play in college baseball teams. Fortunately, the Internet has proven to be a useful venue for both athletes in high school and athletic recruiters looking for new talent. There are many websites and online forums wherein students and scouts can come together and interact. Big College Scholarship Bucks are Won in Summer

Driving to the beach. Visiting the park for an enjoyable picnic. Seeing a baseball game. Calling on the local fishing hole. These are great summertime activities. Other pursuits include painting, cutting the grass and washing
and waxing the car. We look forward to all of them with great anticipation. When the weather gets warm (no doubt about it), thoughts and actions turn to outdoor events.

One activity that gets forgotten by many college-bound students and their families is the inside expedition of hunting for college scholarships, searching for huge scholarship dollars, initiating the quest for money that will significantly reduce or eliminate college debt. This happens for four reasons. First, it is easy to forget because summer is now and scholarships are in the future, the distant future. Second, my child is not smart enough to win a scholarship. So, why bother thinking about it now or ever. A third possibility: our student has no desire to go to college. Fourth, our family income is too high.

These are all relevant ideas. But, they are all bogus. Heres why. Summer is the best time to begin scholarship activities because there is no rush to get the job done. One can take time to do everything leisurely and thoroughly. Rushing
creates anxiety and anxiety creates mistakes. The old maxim slow and sure wins the race also applies to going after scholarships.

Some students are slow in developing. The first two years produce mediocre outcomes, while the junior and senior years produce above average results. And, know this, scholarship committees often regard the last two years as more important
than the first two!

Got a seventeen year old that has no intention of getting a post-high school education? Attention, attention, attention: a high percentage of these change their minds. Have you made up your mind to use this summer in a profitable way, a way that could eliminate the need for future minimum wage summer jobs? There was a commercial on television a few years back. The slogan went like this: "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later. The choice is up to you." By starting right now, this summer, you can cut your college educational bill by $10,000, $20,000 or even $50,000. Use your computer to investigate and sign up for college scholarship information.

Everything in life is a decision, make the right ones today for your college scholarship success.

9 Killer Mistakes That Destroy College Scholarship Applications

Are there mistakes that can disqualify a college
scholarship application? You bet. Generally speaking, most local scholarship committees may find a few minor mistakes acceptable, but the higher the level of competition, the less tolerance there is for a faux pas. And when you go for the gold at the national level of competition, no mistake is permissible. Even at the local level, if the competition is heavy, one error can result in the loss of money.

Even small spelling mistakes can cause an application to be thrown out. A judge reviewed a submission from a girl who was second in her class. She had a 3.95 GPA. The problem? She misspelled salutatorian. Believe it! How does that
happen? Surely, it should have been noticed. Was it a keyboarding error? Maybe.

Another application from a boy on the baseball team noted that he won the league batting title with a .259 average. Know anything about baseball? Most likely, the number 2 should have been a 3, 4, 5, or even 6.

Yet, another listed the applicant's age as "88." Do you suppose she was the oldest high school student in the country...in the world? But wait, she listed her birth date as eighteen years earlier. Those are the kinds of silly little miscues that can disqualify good candidates. Use the computer spell check and have someone read for context and spelling problems. Most people cannot do a good job of proof-reading themselves. Why take a chance?
Another blunder is leaving blank spaces. This is not a good thing. The committee may think that you are trying to hide something. If the question or statement is not applicable to you, write DNA on the line, which is the standard abbreviation or acronym for Does Not Apply.

Use a computer and keyboard whenever possible. Investigate the many inexpensive and free form-filling computer programs. No long hand here. Never write in pencil. And, NEVER, NEVER. EVER, EVER use whiteout.

Follow directions exactly. It is not unusual to see lists where paragraphs are required and vice versa. Sometimes a signature is needed with the name printed. A simple YES or NO may be necessary, Instead, an opinion is given.

Here's a tricky one that trips many juniors and seniors with honor roll credentials. After ten years in school, they still have problems using to, too, two, and they're, their, there.

Oops! I saw a sure regional and possible national winner disqualified, because her application missed the deadline date...by one day. Always beat the deadline. Mail early.

How could this happen? An app arrived without the parent permission slip signature.

Check, Check, Check.

This bears repeating: most mistakes can be eliminated when others proof the application. Then read it aloud while someone else listens.

What can you do, if the mistake cannot be corrected? Be sure to make a copy before you start. If it says "copies are not permitted," go back for one or two more originals.

Planning produces positive outcomes when the scholarship effort is truly a family affair.

Marketing Among Baseball Players

Introduction

Baseball is one of the most well attended and well loved sports in the United States. Even newspaper reports recording the lowest MLB attendance do not even compare to the highest attendance in other sports such as the NBA. Consequently, one is left to wonder whether there is a need for personal marketing techniques among the baseball players. The answer to this question is a definite yes. Baseball players just like any other players need to market their services to the public, coaches and also to the baseball association. The paper shall look at an in depth analysis of how baseball players market themselves and some recommendations will also be given about aspects that need improvements.

How baseball players market themselves

Product endorsements

The first major avenue that baseball players use to market themselves as sporting products is through product endorsements. Usually, players are approached by interested companies and then requested to endorse a certain product. This may be done by displaying the endorsement on television advertisements, on the cover/packaging of that particular product, through posters about the product or other media channels. (Howard, 2007)

It should be noted that many baseball players may not be as enthusiastic about endorsement deals as other players in the market. Usually, basketball players, golfers and tennis players are greatly associated with this form of advertising in comparison to base ball players. Despite this low turnout, a few players have exploited this avenue. For instance, a number of magazines such as "Sports Daily" have been targeting sports marketing within the country. They have explained just how some baseball players utilize television advertisement to make themselves known throughout the entire country. The latter magazine has given the name of the following baseball players as some of the most marketable baseball players in the country. They include:

Sammy Sosa (Chicago Cubs) Alex Rodriguez (Texas Rangers) Derek Jeter (Yankees)

The latter player is one of the most respected sports marketers in baseball. This is partly as a result of his ability to secure long term deals with influential companies within the country. For instance, he managed to secure deals with Sporting Company Nike and also with Gatorade. Nike is well recognized in the process of promoting sports players and in this case baseball players because their products directly target sporting enthusiasts. Additionally, this company is highly successful thus implying that their ability to meet players prices is quite credible. (Howard, 2007)

The latter player (Jeter) has also secured deals with Fleet Bank and Armour Hot Dogs. These two companies indicate just how versatile baseball players are in terms of reaching a wide range of companies. Not only do these players go for endorsements in sports affiliated companies, but they also venture in other types of companies that may have nothing to do with sports such as the food sector or the banking industry. The reason behind such an approach is that baseball players are trying to reach a wide range of audiences through their endeavors. The majority of baseball sponsors actually come from non sport related fields. Additionally, many supporters and fans also come from other sectors of the economy. This is why it is favorable to use this line of thought while marketing oneself.

An example of one of the advertisements made by a baseball player was the Visa advertisement of 2004. In this advertisement, Yankees player Jeter is depicted as a baseball player who has wronged his team owner. The latter role was also played by the actual Yankees team owner. In this advertisement, the baseball player is asked just how he manages to go out all night but still play a good game of baseball. In response to this, the baseball player show his visa card and even opts to take the team owner out for a night out. When asked to comment about their use of the baseball player in their advertisement the Visa vice president Madam Silver claimed that the company had a keen eye for the kind of events or issues that are in season. Since baseball (and that particular baseball player) were highly respected, then Visa knew that they had a higher chance of getting the attention of their target market by appealing to them through such a well know player. Shown below is an image depicting the latter player

Source: http://www.usatoday.com/

On the other hand, Jeter chose to participate in this advertisement because he understood the fact that he could get greater levels of exposure here rather than in other promotional strategies because the advertisement would be aired at the Emmy awards and in local television shows for a very long period. Additionally, ratings designed to measure the overall success of the advertisement also indicated that the process was highly successful. For instance, it was found that twenty six percent of the respondents who saw this advertisement liked it a lot. Fifteen percent of them also claimed that they liked it. This means that the advertisement was effective in getting the message across but most importantly for this baseball player; it was important in exposing him to the public eye. (Howard, 2007)

Most companies that use baseball players for their advertisements claim that these adverts are important in ensuring that the public can still generate excitement about the advertisement or that there should be a buzz surrounding the ad. However, in instances where this is overdone, then baseball players may not be able to create the image or change that they require. However, if done in moderation, then it can attract the attention of the general audience.

MLB Campaigns

MLB has not been very enthusiastic about marketing its baseball players as other major league games in the United States. They were fond of complaining that their players require too much enumeration or that they were not good enough. In response to these attacks, then the baseball labor union has a talk with MLB management to inform them about the possibility of promoting baseball players. (Hallstrom, 2006)

In response to the agreement that they made with the association, the company decided that after the season it would promote their player's capabilities through major campaigning. The campaign was dubbed I live for this. Through this avenue, it was possible for the MLB to market their baseball players as approachable individuals. In fact the baseball players have been accused of being too serious and that they do not come across as approachable. Consequently, the campaign was engineered to make them appear as though they are quite open minded and understanding about prevailing circumstances.

The latter group was able to reach a large number of people because statistics indicate that baseball is one of the sporting activities with the highest number of great players at any given season throughout the United States. Consequently, bringing this out was an important part of the program. On top of that, they asserted that the kinds of personalities that baseball players had was quite likeable and that they were wonderful people to be around. The following players highlight just how true these assertions are

Henderson Rickey Eric Gange Barry Bonds Albert Pujols John Smoltz

All the latter players have a very wide list of admirers. These have been depicted by the kinds of stories that have been aired in most local news channels and other sporting channels. Usually, this is possible as result of the efforts made by the MLB to organize the viewing of these products. (Mc Eylea, 2008)

Franchise values

Some players use the names of their respective clubs to market themselves. In other words, as soon as they qualify to play for a certain well known team then they market themselves as the faces representing those games. One such example is the team captain of the Yankees. This player has become one of the well known players owing to the fact that he uses his affiliation to the Yankees to inform the public about his existence.

The latter approach is quite important in the world of baseball because failure to use it may result in very poor exposure for a player. Additionally, when players affiliate themselves to baseball clubs that have been performing poorly, then they may ruin their marketing strategy. A good example of such a club is the Expos. The expos has not been doing well over the past season owing to the fact that their management has been trying to relocate them to other parts of the country. In fact, records show that players within this club have not been paid well because the club lost close to thirty million dollars because of their failure to relocate. Players who associate themselves with such a club are bound to ruin their overall image.

Public relations

Because of the level of modesty that is prevalent in the MLB, one cannot ignore the fact that this is one of the most essential marketing tools in the sports. Many players opt for this alternative because public relations offers certain features that cannot be found in other sport marketing activities. First and foremost, through public relations, the public can learn all about a player's history rather than just a particular aspect about them. This is possible because when most sports magazines, newspapers or websites write about the good deeds that baseball players participated in, they are likely to add in certain comments about the career or the ability of those respective baseball players. . (Mc Eylea, 2008)

Public relations is an important marketing avenue because the public tends to believe it more than other direct forms. This is because a third party is giving commentaries about the community or social responsibility enacted by a player rather than the player merely talking about himself. The public usually assumes that an external party has higher chances of telling the truth in comparison to the particular player who may be making the comments on his own.

An example of how baseball players have marketed themselves using this avenue is though donations to scientific organizations. Baseball players from the Phillies have built for themselves reputations of giving back to the society by encouraging research conducted by ALS institute. It has been giving funds for their projects and this has generated a lot of positive enthusiasm for the public about this. Additionally, the latter players have taken part in specific endeavors with one of the most prominent personalities being Curt Schilling. This baseball player has shown his dedication to the research institute by making contributions to them even after transferring to other teams that did not have a contract with the latter institute.

Another good example of how baseball payers have marketed themselves in the field of public relations is through community programs such as the Inner Cities program. The purpose of this program is to assist in the rehabilitation of crime prone neighborhoods through the common bond of baseball. Usually, the neighborhoods chosen for such projects are those ones that have recorded very high levels of drug abuse, teen violence, gang violence and other societal vices. (CDM sports, 2008)

The result of the public relations campaigns have reflected very positively among members of the baseball association or the persons who took part in the program themselves. For instance, the latter mentioned program allowed baseball players the opportunity to showcase their positive side by creating a platform in which they could interact with the children. The children in that neighborhood were given items such as;

Bats Balls Gloves Etc

A follow up of the program also found that large numbers of them had embraced a positive aspect in life. For instance, some of them pursued their education and were able to complete college through baseball scholarships. As if this was not enough, a substantial number of them embraced lifestyle changes by living positively. Consequently, through these avenues, a number of baseball players were exposed to the public and most of them could now fit into the lifestyle of a well known player.

Direct marketing for scholarships

Because of the relative prevalence and fame of the baseball game, then a series of marketing agents have been created in order to encourage direct marketing to baseball coaches and auctions. Through this avenue, students can get college scholarships for baseball and thus begin a long and elaborate career in their respective sporting teams. Taking the example of a group known as Athletics scholarships; this company is important in laying out some of the important qualities that potential players willing to join the baseball association need to know before entering into those fields. For example, one has to tell coaches exactly what kind person they are and why they should be considered as potential members of a certain team.

There are a series of associations that are responsible for taking care of these obligations. The first one is the NCAA and the other is NAIA. Through the NCAA students have the potential to access close to six thousand scholarships through the program. Some of these scholarships may either be full scholarships or they may be partial ones depending on students' qualification. (Athletic scholarships, 2008)

Most sports athletes are actually fond of using this approach nowadays. Most of them may write down details about themselves and their experience in baseball within their resumes. They eventually send this resumes to the concerned parties and those who happen to be in need of it can access it through the most favorable avenues.

Conclusion

Baseball players are more laid back in their approach to marketing themselves. However, this does not imply that they do not engage in the practice. Most players market themselves in less obvious methods such as public relations, MLB franchising and also through campaigns made by the MLB. However, there are still certain direct forms of marketing that entail advertisement. There are usually done through product endorsements. Additionally, some candidates interested in joining the MLB may market themselves directly by writing about their qualities and sending them to the respective coaches or associations.
